U.I Awo Hall Executives (Team Standard 2018) Cleared of Alleged Misappropriation of Funds

The two-year war that raged between the executive members (2018/19) of the Obafemi Awolowo hall (Awo Hall) University of Ibadan and the allegations laid against them by their Hall Warden has been settled, with the executive members exonerated of all charges.

It was gathered that the excos had been alleged of misappropriation of funds and lack of accountability by the hall warden Dr. Mrs. Adedoyin Aguoru, which led to the dissolution of the executive body and a taint on the personalities of the executive members.

In a joint letter signed by the president and made public by the executive members, it was made clear the proceedings from the investigation and the eventual acquital verdict given by the Students Affairs Division of the University.

Below is the content of the letter:

Re: Misappropriation of Funds and Lack of Accountability

This is an avenue to state in clear terms the true state of affairs during our tenure as Hall Executives other than allowing the earlier false impression of misappropriation of funds and lack of accountability leveled against us take preeminence.

It is on record that we were democratically elected to office as Hall Executives on Wednesday, 28 February, 2018. God being on our side, we make bold to say that we did serve to the best of our ability; carried out our mandate dutifully, diligently and excellently as students’ representatives. We considered the allegation of misappropriation and lack of accountability, a dent on our reputation.

However, our appointment was unofficially dissolved barely two weeks to the end of the tenure on Friday, 8th March, 2019 due to false allegations, letter signed by the Hall Warden Dr. (Mrs.) Agouru such as misappropriation of funds, as well as unaccountability.

After the indictment, audit report was made known to us by Mrs. T. Sunmola in April 10, 2019 after we have been dissolved, we pressed for a central auditing of the account of our tenure, because our names has been wrongly tarnished that we embezzled, whereas we served AWO Hall with all sincerity. The receipts were not released until 4 months after for central auditing.

After this, all receipts of expenses or purchase incurred for the hall and its residents were submitted for official investigation by the University Central Audit (after our dissolving, which means that we were wrongly dissolved before official audit was carried out).

We never had access to withdrawal of any money from the students’ account without a Principal Signatory who was a member of the hall management approved by the hall warden.

All receipts of purchases were audited by the University Central Auditors, coupled with investigations that lasted over a year and no case of misappropriation of funds was established.

All allegations of impropriety leveled against our Executives have been thoroughly investigated and found not to be true. All necessary documents and records on financial transactions were duly submitted to the University authority for proper audit.

A letter signed by the Deputy Registrar (Students) clearing us of all allegations was issued by the Student Affairs Division.  The letter exonerated us of all accusations.

Explanation on Aduke’s Collection (the bag vendor).

We wish to state categorically that our transactions with the said vendor were never a shady deal. Due process of bedding and selection was undertaken and Aduke, the Vendor brought samples of the bags she intended to produce.

In order to ensure transparency in the procurement process, the proposed items were displayed at the entrance of the Hall for three (3) weeks for Hall residents to make their choices. As due process demanded, the Hall management was informed about the packages, thereafter, a cheque of N280, 000 was issued for the transaction signed by the Assistant Hall Warden.

However, to our utter dismay after the receipt of the said amount by Aduke, all she produced and supplied as the first tranche was totally unacceptable. The bags were rejected by the Hall Executives and other residents. We immediately informed the Hall Management of this development, and we were advised to instruct her to stop production and make a refund. Nevertheless, a total of 73 bags were collected because they were manageable at the cost of  N800. Aduke was formally communicated in writing to refund a sum of N211, 600 because she was able to produce 73 acceptable bags out of 500 and the money has been refunded into the Awo Hall Account at the Micro Finance Bank UI.

Things handed over to the Hall Management

It would interest the reader of this rejoinder, that despite the fact, that our tenured office as the Students Representatives was called to a halt on Friday, 8 March, 2019, we make bold to say that we had achieved so much for the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence.

Things we handed over are as follows:

A sum of Three million naira (N3,000,000) in the Awo Hall students’ account, Microfinance Bank, U.I.

A sum of Twenty four thousand naira (N24,000)  in cash,  handed over to the Secretary to the Hall Warden (Mrs. Akinyele) as directed by the Hall Warden. i.e.

Balance for Sniper – N10,000

Fine for receipts/tellers   -  N3,200

Cash payment for T-shirt  -  N11,000

                             =  Total is N24,200.00

Students’ packages – (bags, sweat shirts, buckets, air fresheners, and tissues) handed over to the interim executives, which were distributed to the students.

 Our Achievements

Purchase of a new Public Address System for passing out of information to the students.

Renovation of the Hall Library (fixing of light switches and electrical sockets for illumination, and the Air-conditioner.)

Renovation of the Basket Ball Court. (Architect recommended by one of the Hall Management)

Monthly sanitation and periodical washing of the Hall Water tank.

Welfare packages for indigent students.

Fixing of street lights within by the Hall’s surroundings.

A large frame board displaying Obafemi Awolowo Hall of residence

Weekly and monthly checking up of all Awoites in their rooms (over a thousand students were visited monthly)

This write up becomes necessary for record purpose, because our name has been tarnished by the report posted by Mrs. Temitope Sunmola (Auditor) and letter of dissolve served the executive by the Hall Warden Dr. (Mrs.) Doyin Aguoru caused the embarrassment we are getting from people everywhere.

The report was posted on social media and facebook by some students.

Insecurity in Oyo State: Towards a safer Oyo State.

Blame game/Opposition game A wise man once said, "When you keep blaming others for every situation you're in, someday you’ll begin to look like you’re the mistake all along". This holds true of our politicians in Nigeria. When a new government spend a good portion of its administration to point fingers on the failures or bad gimmicks of the old/displaced government instead of thinking outside the box to proffer solutions to the dilemma at hand, soon they will start to appear incompetent and an excuse seeker. Blame game has been a sad trend in our polity in this country. The APC government at the federal level elected in 2015 spent their entire first term blaming the deposed PDP government for insurgency and insecurity. Yeah, this state of insecurity ended the PDP reign of 16 years and the same is about to end the APC reign because they've also failed to keep the nation secured. They are now a victim of the situation that brought them to be. I hope this same trend  won
