Amotekun, dead on arrival?

It was a bright evening as we marched through the bush path towards an earthen well in the thick forest to fetch some water back to the camp.

Few miles towards the described location of the well, a young ambassador veered off path to cut a tree branch and he was immediately dragged back by another ambassador as he pointed towards a partially buried tree branch on the ground. He said that was a sign to warn about a trap. Lo and behold, he was right, there was a trap.

The ambassador grew up in an agrarian village and understood how to navigate forests following certain signs of nature and hunters. It dawned on me, that the act of forest navigation is an art and also a skill

Western States security network (operation Amotekun) was put in place to checkmate the activities of killer herdsmen. Why would it be imperative to have an outfit that would assist the military and other para-military outfits to end their menace? Simply because the military and police have failed and are inadequate with forest sweeps where these killer herdsmen camp, mobilise, and regroup.

Who then are the best fit for this task? It goes without saying, that local dwellers, hunters, and vigilantes with vast knowledge and experience about forest terrains and their navigation are the best for the job. Forest navigation is a skill. Recruiting city dwellers who have no interaction with forest life or its navigation, is like branding old wines in new wineskins.

it pains me when the government makes a mess of brilliant ideas just for cheap political scores. So it could be said that jobs were created? Or that the government now employs digital technology in its recruitment processes? Cheap scores are at the detriment of a bigger achievement of our safety! We can, and we must do better.

Well, maybe... Except, Amotekun is just another city para-military outfit to join the parade parades of the cities.

Blame game/Opposition game A wise man once said, "When you keep blaming others for every situation you're in, someday you’ll begin to look like you’re the mistake all along". This holds true of our politicians in Nigeria.
